Elizaveta Friesem is a scholar and practitioner of media literacy education focusing on issues of diversity, in particular on gender and sexuality. In her primary research she combines principles of media literacy education, media studies, gender studies, and anti-bias education in order to explore strategies of teaching about diversity in and through the media. In addition, she investigates the impact of the media on public understanding of sensitive social issues (e.g., sexual violence). Elizaveta Friesem holds a PhD in Media and Communication from Temple University, and a PhD in Cultural Studies from St. Petersburg State University, Russia. She is an affiliated faculty of the Media Education Lab, and a Leadership Council member of the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE).
